Your Opinions

The IMC wants to hear from as many people as possible about things to do with its work. By telling the IMC what you think, or telling it things you know, you can help ensure its reports reflect the widest possible range of views and information.

Everything you say will be treated in the strictest confidence. You can e-mail, telephone or write - see "Contact Us" for how to get in touch. If you feel comfortable doing so, please let us know how to get back to you. But if you prefer not to do this, it does not matter.

To help you, here are a few questions you might find helpful. They are only a guide about the sort of thing the IMC would like to hear from people about. Do not feel you need to follow them if you would prefer just to say something in your own way. Anything you say, however you say it, will be of interest to the IMC.

Illegal activities of paramilitary groups

The IMC wants to hear about any illegal activities by paramilitary groups:
  • violence of any kind such as sectarian attacks or so-called "punishment beatings";
  • involvement in other forms of crime, whether something like extortion, smuggling of any kind, drugs, or counterfeit goods;
  • putting pressure on people to do things they do not want to do and should not have to.

Some questions, to help you:

  • What do you know about paramilitary groups, or about one in particular?
  • Can you tell us about some of the things it has done or is doing?
  • Do you know how the group is organised or operates, in your area or more widely?
  • If you think back over a period - say some months or years - how have things changed, and are they better or worse?
  • Locally, how do people, community groups and other organisations react to these activities?

Exiling

The IMC also wants to hear from anyone who knows about or has been a victim of the practice of “exiling” by a paramilitary group whether it was from their existing home to some other part of Northern Ireland or outside Northern Ireland. In particular we would like to know:

Some questions, to help you:

  • what paramilitary group was responsible for the exiling;
  • will you give us details of how it came about;
  • has the paramilitary group indicated to you that you will be allowed to return home and if so, when;
  • any other information which would be of use to the IMC on this subject would be welcomed

Security normalisation

The IMC submitted its fourth and final report on the security normalisation programme to the British and Irish Governments in September 2007. The Sixteenth Report was published on Monday, 17 September 2007.
