John G D Grieve was born in 1946. He has an Honours Degree in Philosophy (Newcastle University) and a Masters Degree (Post Graduate research in Drugs Policy Analysis from Cranfield University).
He joined the Metropolitan Police in 1966 at Clapham, South London. He served as a Detective throughout South London, in every role from undercover officer to policy chair on drug squads. His duties also involved
the Flying Squad, Robbery Squad and Murder
Squad senior investigator. He was a Divisional
Commander at Bethnal Green in East London.
John Grieve worked in Europe, America,
South East Asia and Australia. He introduced
Asset Seizure Investigation in the United
Kingdom. As Head of Training at Hendon
Police College, he organised the ‘Community
Fairness, Justice’ Conference.
As the first Director of Intelligence
for the Metropolitan Police, he led the
MPS Intelligence Project and the Anti-Terrorist
Squad as National Co-ordinator during the
1996-1998 bombing campaigns. In August
1998, he became the first Director of the
Racial and Violent Crime Task Force, until
retiring in May 2002.
Now Senior Research Fellow at Portsmouth University and Professor Emeritus at London Metropolitan University. John Grieve has also been appointed independent Chair of the Ministry of Justice Race for Justice Advisory Group
He was awarded the QPM in 1997 and appointed
CBE in the Millennium Honours list.
John was formally appointed by the British
Government to the Independent Monitoring
Commission on 7 January 2004.
His interests include walking, history
(including art and police history) and painting.
